Scrub and Peely

Project time: 1 month
Introduction to Product Design

Brief:

Design a carrot peeler for people with a fear of blades

Interviews & Research

I was able to interview someone with a fear of blades and observe his behaviors. This helped me gain new insights, such as the correlation between the shape of blades and their perceived danger.

Ideation

I went through several rounds of ideas and landed on a modular design that includes two heads. This modular design helps the user gradually transition into using the peeler.

Validation with Models

I created a low-fidelity model of my idea and went back to my user. This helped me find possible areas for refinement.

Final

I modeled my refined idea in Rhino and created a high fidelity model of the peeler using a SLS nylon printer. The model was a working peeler, and it was fun seeing my idea come to life.

This project was special to me because it was my first exposure to the design process. Through creating this peeler, I learned how to validate and refine through feedback. Overall, it taught me the importance of keeping the user in the center at all times.
