French Press Spoon

Brief: Create a cooking tool or vessel to enhance your favorite recipe
Inspiration
To make coffee, I use a tablespoon to measure and a bamboo skewer to stir the steeped beans. I thought, why not make a spoon that can do both of these? It measures 1 tbsp, and it is long enough to stir the beans at the bottom of the French press. Like the skewer, it is wooden, so it won’t shatter the glass. Also, it is shaped to sit on top of the French press for easy access.
Prototyping
Since I had no experience carving, I did a trial run in poplar wood. The mistakes I made in this model helped inform my next steps and establish a step-by-step plan for the final.
Making the Final
After creating a cut list, I began making my final in cherry wood. I used a combination of cutting, carving, and sanding to create the form I wanted. After it was glued up, I finished it with a food safe mineral oil.
